The first performances of The Ghosts May Laugh, a play set in a Western Front dug-out on Christmas Eve, 1917, will be held at the Burton-Taylor Theatre, Oxford (Gloucester Street) on Friday 12 and Saturday 13 December 2003.

An officer of the 12th East Yorkshires on his round in a snow-covered support trench is drawing aside the gas-curtain of a dug out.

As the play begins, four British officers tell ghost stories. Soon their game becomes a revelation of terrifying memories. Four men, four tales, one war, one choice. It was written in 2001 by Stuart Lee, who is currently Head of the Learning Technologies Group at Oxford University. As Head of Humanities Computing Services and a member of the English Faculty at Oxford, Lee was also responsible for the JTAP Project: Virtual Seminars for Teaching Literature - Four web-based tutorials to teach World War One poetry (based on the ideas developed from his tutorial on Isaac Rosenberg) and the creation of an on-line archive of the manuscripts of Wilfred Owen.

The performances will be at 7.30pm on Friday and at 3.00pm and 7.30pm on Saturday 13th. Tickets for all performances cost 5.00, concessions 4.00. Tickets for the 3.00pm performance on Saturday can still be booked online from the Burton Taylor Theatre (Oxford Playhouse). Otherwise, tickets may still be available directly from the Box Office. Please call 01865 305305 from the UK or +44 1865 305305 from other countries to check availability.

For most, this notice probably will be too short for travel to Oxford this weekend, but if anyone is interested in putting on their own performance, they can obtain the full script of the play through playscripts.com. It requires 8-15 cast members.

discussion of the play and an excerpt from it (PDF) are also available.

THese details are also published at www.gravesiana.org.
