The Society is pleased to report that a total of 42 guests attended its annual New Year lunch at St Giles House (below), at St John's College, Oxford on Saturday, 29 January, 2005. The event was declared a resounding success by all.

The venue was once again provided at the kind invitation of the Society's Honorary Vice-President, Professor John Kelly, a Fellow of St John's College, and Mrs Christine Kelly. A highlight of the event was that the Society's new Honorary President, Dr Sally Chilver, Robert Graves's niece and a former Head of Bedford College, London and Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford, was able to attend as the Guest of Honour.

The speaker was Dr Patrick McGuinness, an accomplished academic and emerging young poet, who is himself no stranger to Graves Studies, having written a number of articles on Graves. Patrick is a Fellow of St Anne’s College, Oxford, where he lectures in French.

A collection of his own poems, The Canals of Mars, was published last year by Carcanet Press. Patrick gave an apt and captivating talk about his high regard for Robert Graves's poetry and read an interesting selection of Graves's poems that have a particular appeal to him. He also read a selection of his own poetry from 'The Canals of Mars'. Copies of the Patrick's book and a number of Robert Graves titles from Carcnaet were available for sale at the event.

Details of future Robert Graves Society events will be posted on these pages, which can be 'bookmarked' now (if you use Internet Explorer) by typing Ctrl-D. The Society has already gained a number of new members and friends as a result of the Oxford lunch and we hope that you will decide to join them!
