|Members of the Robert Graves Society or others who are considering joining may like to know that the Society has arranged a luncheon in Madrid, Spain at 2.30pm on Thursday 5 December 2002, at the Circulo de Bellas Artes, a cultural centre where a major exhibition on Robert Graves will be opened on that day. A special viewing of the exhibition for Society members will take place at a suitable time before the luncheon.
An online registration form for the luncheon is now available at www.robertgraves.org/madrid.html. Places are limited and early registration is advised. The organisers have made arrangements with a number of suitable hotels and details of these are available on request on registration.
The Circulo de Bellas Artes is within Madrid’s “Golden Triangle” of cultural institutions and museums, which include, within walking distance, the world famous Prado Museum http://museoprado.mcu.es/ , Thyssen Bornemisza Museum www.museothyssen.org and the Reina Sofía Museum http://museoreinasofia.mcu.es . Further details of these and other museums and cultural institutes, plus maps and other useful information is available from SoftGuide Madrid at:
A catalogue of the exhibition is being produced and will be available for sale through the Society's website at http://www.robertgraves.org.
Those who are thinking of attending the exhibition and lunch may be interested to know that the Circulo de Bellas Artes, http://www.circulobellasartes.com/ , boasts what one whiskey company has named: "One of the World's Best Bars". See: www.worldsbestbars.com/city/Madrid/CirculoDeBellasArtes.asp .
Those travelling from further afield than Europe may like to know that a related event, "Anthem for Doomed Youth", will be taking place concurrently at the Imperial War Museum in London. This exhibition, about twelve World War 1 poets including Robert Graves, will be held at the Imperial War Museum in London from 31 October 2002 to 27 April 2003. Further details are now available on the web at http://www.iwm.org.uk/lambeth/anthem/. There is a page dedicated to Robert Graves at http://www.iwm.org.uk/lambeth/anthem/graves.htm .
A trio of interesting and related public events will be held at the Imperial War Museum during the week leading up to this year's Armistice Day on 11 November: These will be a poetry reading introduced by the distinguished Oxford poet and academic Jon Stallworthy, a concert to include a World premiere of Ivor Gurney's Quartet in F, and several free showings of the film “Regeneration”, based on Pat Barker’s trilogy. Further details of these public events are available at: http://www.iwm.org.uk/lambeth/anthem/events.htm .
The Robert Graves Society is arranging for a private viewing and reception for its members for an evening in January, 2003. Details of this will be announced soon at www.robertgraves.org.
Jon Stallworthy has written a new 120 page book, Anthem for Doomed Youth, to accompany the Imperial War Museum exhibition. This will be published by Constable Robinson on 24 October 2002 and is available from www.amazon.co.uk at £10.39, a discount of 20% on the published price of £12.99. Equivalent prices in US Dollars will be available through www.amazon.com. The ISBN is 1841196355. To support the Robert Graves Society, please order this book from Amazon through the Society’s website at http://www.robertgraves.org .
For further information about any of these events please contact Patrick Villa at email@example.com, or Dr Ian Firla at firstname.lastname@example.org, or keep an eye on the website at http://www.robertgraves.org.
I hope that you will decide to attend the Madrid luncheon and that I might look forward to receiving your registration. Places for accompanying persons are available.
Best wishes, Patrick
