|A new leaflet for the 2004 Sixth Robert Graves International Conference in Paris, 6-10 July, 2004 has just been published: it is now available on the web either in PDF format, at http://www.gravesiana.org/paris/2004leaflet.pdf or as a Word document here. It will also be published shortly on the main pages of theRobert Graves Trust's website.
Interest in this year's conference, 'Robert Graves and the Experience of War', has been brisk in recent weeks: the organisers are delighted to announce that both Dr Dominic Hibberd, whose latest biography of Wilfred Owen was published in 2002 to wide acclaim, and Dr Nicholas Carter of the Univesityof Trieste, whose work on the poetry of Robert Graves is widely known and respected as being amongst the best scholarship on the author's writing, have both agreed to give keynote addresses at the conference. Confirmations from some other leading Graves scholars are anticipated.
Also, more than a dozen proposals for other papers and several registrations have been received to date. The papers proposed so far indicate that both the quality of discussion and the number of countries represented are likely to be high! In view of this high level of interest, and the exceptional quality of abstracts received, the deadline for the proposal of papers has been extended to 30 April 2004, as indicated in the leaflet.
Other features of this year's conference will include a one-day tour of some of the battlefields where Graves and Sassoon served during the Great War, and first met. Back in Paris, there will also be a poetry reading, led by some distinguished poets and writers. And we are delighted to announce that the newly-founded War Poets Association (this website is under construction) will be launched officially at the British Embassy in Paris during this year's Robert Graves conference.
All of these details are gathered together in the leaflet, which can be printed out on two sides of an A4 sheet of paper from either Adobe PDF Reader or Word. It can be used to register for the conference, by posting it to me at the address indicated. Alternatively, online registration, which includes the option of payment in GB Pounds, USD or Euros via PayPal, is possible at www.robertgraves.org/register.php. Abstracts of proposed papers can also be submitted there online. Or just send an e-mail to firstname.lastname@example.org!
Further information about the conference is also available, from this website, at www.robertgraves.org/paris_conference.php.
Please study the leaflet, print it out, e-mail it, or simply send its URL (www.gravesiana.org/paris/2004leaflet.pdf) to others who may be interested in the conference.
On behalf of Dunstan Ward and the whole organising team, I hope to see you in Paris in July!
