A46 ANTIGUA, PENNY, PUCE [1936]
a. First edition:
‘ANTIGUA, PENNY, PUCE’ | by | ROBERT GRAVES | [publisher’s emblem] | THE SEIZIN PRESS – DEYÁ MAJORCA | AND | CONSTABLE & COMPANY LTD | LONDON
Collation: [A]8 B–U8, 160 leaves.
p.[i] “ANTIGUA, PENNY, PUCE”; p.[ii] list of books by Graves; p.[iii] title-page; p.[iv] publication and printer’s notices; p.[v] TO | WILLIAM FULLER, | IN GRATITUDE; p.[vi] blank; p.vii CONTENTS; p.[viii] blank; pp.1–311 text; p. [312] blank.
18.4 × 12.2 cm. Bulk: 2.8/3.2 cm. White wove paper; all edges trimmed. White wove endpapers. Bound in dull maroon cloth; front and back blank; spine stamped in white: ANTIGUA | PENNY | PUCE | a novel by | ROBERT | GRAVES | SEIZIN- | CONSTABLE
Price: 7s. 6d. Number of copies unknown. Published 15 October 1936 in white dust-jacket printed in black and purplish-brown. The front flap of the jacket is a cancel pasted onto the stub of the original flap.
Notes: The first impression, p. 100, l.11 has ‘ytyle’ for ‘style’; p.103, line 15 has ‘being’ for ‘been’; p.293, ult. has lowered ‘1’ in the word ‘several’; in some copies these misprints have been corrected by hand. I have examined four copies where the word ‘several’ is correctly printed, with the errors on pp. 100 and 103 present. Such copies would seem to have come later in the print run, after a repair was made, as an advance copy exhibits the lowered ‘l’ on p. 293.
Earlier editions of this bibliography indicated A46a was published at 10s.6d. It seems possible that the initial printing of the dust-jackets had this error and that the erroneously priced flaps were excised and replaced by cancel flaps priced 7s.6d., the published price of the book.
Impressions: 2nd, April 1938 at 3s.6d. The second impression is bound in blue cloth stamped in dark blue on the spine in the same manner the first impression. At odds with the April 1938 date for the second impression are the first two lines on p. [iv] which read: First published 1936 | Reprinted · 1936
The dust-jacket of the second impression has integral flaps. It is seen in two states: with and without the price of 3s.6d. printed on the spine panel.
This book has been translated into German, Greek, Hungarian, Polish, Spanish and Swedish.
There was a photographic reprint by Cedric Chivers Ltd., Portway, Bath, in 1971 “at the request of the London and Home Counties Branch of the Library Association”. Identical in content except for the title-page.
A46a.l. First Canadian impression (1936):

Remainder as A46a save for “SEIZIN- | CONSTABLE” being replaced on spine with “MACMILLAN”
