Price: 10s.6d. Number of copies: 9,420. Published 28 January 1943 in white dust-jacket printed in orange and black. The front flap of the first impression dust-jacket has publisher’s advertisements and price; the back flap has an advertisement for the BBC; the back panel has publisher’s blurbs.

Notes: Impressions: 2nd, January 1943 (2,950 copies); 3rd, June 1949 (3,471 copies). The collation of the 3rd impression is: [A]/A*8/8 B/B*–M/M*8/8. The 3rd impression was priced 8s.6d.

The page numbers appear in brackets; on p.33 the right bracket is reversed, and on p.283 the left bracket is missing.

Some copies were issued in a dust-jacket with ‘OVERSEAS EDITION’ printed on the front flap. The jacket does not bear a printed price.

Cedric Chivers, Portway, Bath, published a facsimile reprints of this book in 1968 and 1985.

This book has been translated into Czech, French, Polish, Russian and Spanish.

Price: $2.75. Number of copies unknown, but Seymour-Smith says 20,000 plus. 15,000 copies sold before publication. Reported by Graves in letter to John Graves dated 12 December 1944. Published 22 November 1944 in white dust-jacket printed in pink, blue and black.

Notes: The second impression of this edition can be distinguished by the addition of “SECOND PRINTING” and “ALSO BY GRAVES” with the same list of titles as on p.[ii] following the economy, copyright and other notices on p.[iv]. Its bulk is 2.4/3.1 cm. The dust-jackets of the first and second impressions are identical.

Farrar, Straus and Giroux issued a photographic reprint of this edition in 1979 under its Octagon Books imprint. It was issued without a dust-jacket.

The Book-of-the-Month Club issued a photographic reprint in hardcover with dust-jacket in 1991. Dust-jacket design by Monica Elias. Jacket photographs by Eric Jacobson.
