Published in May 1954, with four printings subsequently, for a total of five printings of 126,129 copies. This is Pocket Library book LP 6. Note: There was a limited issue of 75 numbered copies, signed by the illustrator Michael Ayrton, bound in brown morocco, blocked in gold and blind with the same design as the standard binding. An extra colophon leaf was printed, stating that 250 copies were specially-bound in full brown morocco. Owing to a disappointing response by subscribers only 75 copies were actually bound up and issued in this form.
