Price: $4.95. Number of copies: 11,000 (in two printings). Published 5 November 1959 in white dust-jacket printed in black, brown, yellow, brick-red, green, violet and blue. Jacket drawing and illustrations are by Ronald Searle. Dust-jacket design is by Robert Galster.

Notes: Signatures appear quite close to the gutter opposite the final line of text; others than shown may therefore show in other copies.

There was a second impression identical to the first in all respects except it lacks the words “First Edition” on the verso of the title-page.

I have examined a copy of the second impression with the publisher’s price increase sticker pasted over the original price. It is a white sticker printed in black: $6.95 | D. & CO. INC.

Penguin Books published a photographic impression of this book in 2009 in paper covers priced £10.99.

This book has been translated into Swedish.

The dust-jacket of the first impression has no quotations from reviewers printed on the back flap. The jacket of the second impression has quotations from four reviewers on back flap: W. H. Auden, F. W. Bateson, Kenneth Allsop and David Holloway.
